Potayto, potahto, papa, camohtli, patata: this root has many names. Scientifically, it is known as Solanum Tuberosum and as such, is related to the tomato and the eggplant. The colloquial term ‘spud’ likely derives from the spade (tool) that is used to dig a hole when planting potatoes.
