The acceptance of the potato as a food crop in Europe did not happen overnight. Initially, potatoes were mostly considered as a scientific object. Scholars studied the plant and included it in their botanical gardens as a rarity. The potato plant was also celebrated for its looks: its flowers were supposedly worn by the French queen Marie-Antoinette.
