The Spanish conquerors were initially not interested in the potato as a food source. The fact that it did not appear in the bible, grew underground and had a testicular shape caused distrust. That’s also why they nicknamed the tuber ‘Devil’s root’. What caught their attention, though, were its flowers even though the stems and its berries are highly toxic!
