A potato is part of a so-called rhizomatic network. In fact, a potato is a thickened rhizome, storing lots of nutrients for the plant. Rhizomes construct a network underground from which new plants (and roots) can grow. The new potato plant uses the nutrients stored in the rhizome to grow its stem and flowers above ground: little five-pointed stars with a yellow spark in the middle. It kind of looks like the explosion of a supernova!
